How to Repair Loose Hinge Screws

When the screws that hold a door hinge in place get loose, you notice it pretty quickly. The door rattles and doesn’t close the way it should. So you break out a screwdriver and fix the problem, you think.

But because these screws are holding the weight of the door, they’re under an awful lot of tension. And it’s not uncommon for them to wallow out the wood they’re driven into until they won’t stay tight. Try this.

Remove the screw completely and squirt just a little wood glue into the hole, then insert a wooden toothpick or two. When they hit the bottom you can snap them off flush.

Now, when you re-insert the screw, it will have something to bite into as you drive it in place. And you’ll have one less chore on your to-do list.
