Here’s a question from our 4/27/2019 Today’s Homeowner Radio Show.
Kim from Missouri asks, “We put up new hinges and over a period of time, there is this black dust like stuff on the doors where the hinges are. Any good way to clean that off? I have tried wiping it and it smears.”
We say try using a magic eraser on the hinges. If they are older hinges, add a drop of machine oil first.

The magic eraser will remove the protective gloss coat on paint. So if you are removing graphite off the hinge, fine, but off of the paint – bad idea.
Agreed, Arminda! We don’t recommend this tip for painted hinges.
Just brass ones, like in this featured homeowner’s case.
