How to Add Built-in Seating to a Deck

Decks are great places to gather and entertain, but you need to make sure you have plenty of seating in place first. To make this deck more party friendly, we added a built-in corner bench made from treated lumber, with an angled back that attaches to the railing on the deck.

When building deck seating, make the seat 16”-18” high by 15″-18″ deep with a 15° to 20° slant on the back.

Watch this video to see how it was done and find some tips about how to install a built-in outdoor grill.

  1. Is it possible to get the measurements and instructions for the built-in seating for a deck? And also for the cabinet for the outdoor grill? Thanks.

  2. I also would like the instructions to build the built in corner seating for a deck. Thank you. We just finished the deck flooring and if you put individual chairs on the deck you lose way to much room. This built in seating is ideal. Even a small propane fire pit would be a hit near the seating.

  3. I also would like the instructions to build the built in corner seating for a deck. Thank you. We are about to start the deck construction and these plans would be helpful especially if anything can be incorporated with the construction.

  4. I see a lot of questions above regarding the plans for the corner deck seating. My question is “do they exist” & how could I get them? Is this sent individually or is it published somewhere? Thank you

  5. I would like measurements, and instructions for the built seating if possible. Starting a deck project this week, would love to incorporate some seating.

  6. Having to redo may deck, had to remove because it was over my septic tank. So I am in process of rebuilding it with deck seating and would love to have your plans. Thanks

  8. Why do you put something like this, “howto add seating…” but never actually give any measurements or plans. Very misleading website!

    • Hi, Darrell,
We actually have that information in the article, in case you missed it.
“When building deck seating, make the seat 16 to 18 inches high by 15 to 18 inches deep with a 15° to 20° slant on the back,” the article states. Of course, project measurements vary by each home and its unique needs.
Good luck with your project! 🙂
