Lava rocks inside the fire pit serve as a thermally resistant surface on which to start fires.

Step 17

Cover the concrete with a sheet and pieces of scrap wood to keep moist while it cures for 48 hours.

Step 18

Remove the framework with a prybar. Then spray water onto the concrete to help wash off any dirt. You might need a circular saw and chisel to help pry out the inner frame.

Step 19

Pour in two buckets of lava rock and spread out to create a thermally resistant surface on which to start fires.

Step 20

Let concrete cure for 30 days before starting your first fire.

That’s all it takes!

A month from now, you can invite friends to a backyard barbecue and tell stories, share laughs and make memories around the fire pit.
