How to Repair a Hole in a Textured Popcorn Ceiling

We recently painted our textured popcorn ceiling but forgot to remove a hook for a hanging plant. How can I remove it and repair the hole without having to repaint the entire ceiling? -Sonia

Hi Sonia,

Patching a spot on a textured popcorn ceiling is not as difficult as you might imagine. Here’s how to go about it:

  1. Remove the hook from the ceiling and fill the hole with drywall joint compound.
  2. Once the joint compound has dried, apply popcorn ceiling repair spray (available to home centers) to the spot to match the existing ceiling texture.
  3. After the repair spray is dry, dab a coat of your ceiling paint on the spot.

Good luck with your project,

  1. my walls in living room hve textured wall covering there is tear or rip in the middle of the wall about a foot or longer. is ther some kind of needle appratus that would hold glue in order to repair this rip. or can you recommend how i should go about repairing this rip. your help in this matter would be apprecited. thanking you in advance.

  2. I pulled out a plant hook from living room ceiling to paint, when I went to replace hook after painting, the hook will no longer stay screwed in the hole, hole to loose. What can I do or use to tighten up the hole to hold the screw again?

    • Laurie,
If the hook was screwed through the drywall into a ceiling joist, try putting a little glue on a golf tee, driving it into the hole, let it dry, then screw the hook into it. If it wasn’t screwed into a ceiling joist, it should be, or you can try using a toggle or molly bolt to hold it in place.

  3. How do you tape the repair panel in the repair with non damaged texture next to it.
Scraping it off if painted is next to impossible.
