Sealing the joint around a tub is important to prevent water from seeping behind the tile which can cause the wood framing to mold or rot.

  1. Start by scoring the old caulking with a utility knife.
  2. Next, use a putty knife or scraper to remove it.
  3. Clean the joint well and dry the area thoroughly with a hairdryer.
  4. Once the joint is dry, seal the gap with 100% silicone caulk.

To smooth out silicone caulk, dip your finger in mineral spirits before running it along with the bead, or use a product such as Caulk-EZ, which is made for that purpose. Simply spray it on top of the caulking before smoothing.
